McCain Steps to the Right

John McCain received an endorsement from evangelical conservative Gary Bauer earlier today. This doesn’t come as a surprise since Bauer endorsed McCain back in the 2000 election when his own campaign came to a grinding halt.
So McCain, who is reviled by the conservative wing of the Republican party for his moderate centrist political stance and bi-partisan efforts over the years, is now courting prominent figures in the evangelical social conservative crowd in an effort to capture some of that fundamentalist Christian fanatacism that brought us two terms of George W. Bush.
Bauer is anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, and supports Israel. But supporting Israel isn’t a bad thing, right? The problem with evangelicals who “support” Israel is that they think that Israel needs to be around to take part in the end times predicted in Daniel and Revelation. So basically he supports Israel because he thinks that World War III is going to get going there in the next few years when baby Jesus comes back to earth to destroy all of the sinners in the valley of Armageddon with a tongue that is a sword that crushes all the sinners as in a wine press so the blood of the wicked will flow like an ocean.
Doesn’t that sound like exactly the kind of crowd you want supporting a presidential nominee in the next election?
